Illinois Hunting License

How Do I Get My State Hunting License?

Anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1980, is required to have the Hunter Education Certificate in order to legally buy a license or permit to hunt.

  1. Complete the Illinois hunter education certification requirements.
  2. Choose the correct license type.
  3. Buy the license through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources website or an Illinois–approved vendor.

Types of Illinois Hunting Licenses

Illinois Resident

A resident is a person who has lived in Illinois for at least 30 days. Active-duty military members are considered residents.

All Illinois residents must have a resident hunting license. If using firearms, they must also have a Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) Card. The state habitat stamp and species-specific permits may be required.

Non-Resident

All non-residents must have a non-resident hunting license. The state habitat stamp and species-specific permits may be required.

Youth Hunting License

Illinois residents age 17 or younger may purchase the Resident Youth Hunting and Trapping License. They must be under the direct supervision of a licensed hunter age 21 or older.

Senior Hunting License

Illinois residents age 65 or older are eligible for the reduced-fee Resident Senior Hunting License.

Disability License

Illinois residents with disabilities may not be required to have a hunting license. The state habitat stamp and species-specific permits may be required. Visit the Illinois Department of Natural Resources website for more details.

Migratory Waterfowl Requirements

All hunters age 18 or older must purchase the Illinois Migratory Waterfowl Stamp and the Federal Duck Stamp when hunting migratory waterfowl. In addition, hunters are required to have proof of their participation in the Harvest Information Program (HIP).

License Expiration

All hunting licenses and stamps are effective from date of purchase through March 31 of the following year. Illinois residents are able to purchase a lifetime hunting license.
